Pool of Siloam
Nr Leura, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia
The Pool of Siloam is a darling little swimming hole underneath a delicate cascade which skirts the edge of a small cave before falling into the pool below. Situated in a small dell at the bottom of a dip in the mainly clifftop track, this is a cool haven on a hot day which has an enchanted feel meaning it would hardly be surprising to see a water nymph pop up out of the water and say ‘hi’. The pool itself is only just deep enough for a dip and startlingly refreshing with a soft sandy bottom making it perfect for lying back and looking up at the gorgeous little falls.
How To Get There: Park on the corner of Lone Pine Avenue and Olympian Parade in the Gordon Falls Reserve. From here the Pool of Siloam track is signposted, starting at the lower end of the reserve. There are regular trains and buses to the centre of Leura and it is about a half hour walk from the train station to the Gordon Falls Reserve.
Difficulty of access: 3/10 – It is around a thirty minute (1.5km) round trip down a fairly steep track to the Pool of Siloam.
Opening Times/Seasons: All day/ All year
Entrance Fee: None
Facilities Nearby: There is nothing but birdsong at the swimming hole itself although there is a small sandy beach along the edge of the water meaning it is great for kids and picnics or as a rest stop along a longer walk. In the Gordon Falls Reserve there are electric BBQ’s, toilets, dustbins, a kid’s play park and picnic tables. Leura has everything you would expect from a small tourist town.
Other Activities: Following the track south out and up to the clifftops provides classic blue haze views and a great angle on the Three Sisters if you turn and look where you have been. There is also an easy 1.5km circular route joining the Pool of Siloam with another swimming hole at Lyrebird Dell and the Gordon Falls Picnic Area. The track from the Pool of Siloam opens up a world of possibilities for more adventurous hikes as it joins onto several other routes covering a large area of the Blue Mountains.
Other Places of Interest Nearby: The Three Sisters Rock formation is visible from the top of the cliffs further along the trail. There is also a great lookout at nearby Sublime Point. There’s another short, easy walk in the rainforest to the nearby Leura Cascades. Leura Mall is great for a wander lined with cherry trees and some great little shops and cafes, including Josophan’s Fine Chocolates.
Wildlife: The Pool of Siloam attracts many birds, including a semi-resident duck, as well as offering the chance of seeing some of the other diverse wildlife the Blue Mountains area houses.
Places to Eat: Our favourite is the Yellow Deli Common Ground Cafe in Katoomba but there are several places to eat there and closeby in Leura. The Conservation Hut Cafe is right near Wentworth Falls and has dramatic views of the valley and a log fire.
Where to Camp: Ingar Pool has a lovely, simple bush campsite
Other places to Stay: There are plenty of places to stay in the area including many lovely holiday house rentals.
Nearby Towns: Leura, Katoomba
Comments: Although the Pool of Siloam is easily accessible from the centre of Leura (and the train station), the area is a bit of an overlooked gem in a tucked away corner of the Blue Mountains.
